Welcome to Sugaland

As the sun rises on Saturday in Miami, the city will reverberate with a new kind of rhythm. The neighborhood of Liberty City prepares to host an event quite unlike any other – a free celebration of life, memory, and unity titled “Welcome to SugaLand,” curated by the rap queen herself, Trina. Back in her South Florida roots, Trina orchestrates this event to strike a blow against the brutal reality of gun violence that claimed a life too dear to her.

The event is not just another date on Trina’s calendar, but a poignant homage to her 17-year-old niece, Toni Chester, fondly remembered as “Baby Suga”. Her life was abruptly silenced by gun violence in this very city about 10 months ago. July 20, 2002, is seared into Trina’s memory when her niece fell victim to a tragic shooting on Northwest 62 Street and 13 Avenue in Liberty City. Responding to the call, police officers arrived at the scene to discover the heartbreaking news – Baby Suga was gone. The incident, which also left two others injured, plunged the rapper into an unimaginable nightmare.

Now, Trina is turning that nightmare into a call to action. This Saturday, from 1 to 6 p.m., she will be hosting the event in proximity to the tragic crime scene. Miami’s 15 Avenue, along the stretch from Northwest 63 to 65 streets, will echo with Trina’s resolve, her tribute to her lost niece, and her pledge against gun violence. The avenue, under the watch of Miami police officers, will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., offering an open space for Trina’s heartfelt endeavor.

The week leading up to this powerful event saw Trina grace a 99 JAMZ event on Wednesday and is set to commemorate the anniversary of Exchange Miami, a popular nightclub in Miami Beach, on Thursday night. The emotion-charged week culminates with “The Welcome to Suga Land” on Saturday, followed by a post-event celebration at King of Diamonds, a renowned nightclub in northwest Miami-Dade.

As Trina’s stand against gun violence unfolds, the detectives on Baby Suga’s case continue their relentless pursuit of justice. The authorities encourage anyone with pertinent information to step forward and assist their investigation by calling Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

“Welcome to Suga Land” is not merely an event. It’s a platform where heartbreak meets resilience, a tribute that underscores a stark societal issue while celebrating the vibrancy of a life cut short. Trina’s efforts offer a ray of hope, a plea for change, and a testament to a spirit undimmed by the darkness of tragedy.
