Carnival Cruise Line Charts a Bold Course with “Innovation Itinerary” Plan: New Ships, Enhanced Destinations, and a Fresh Take on Fun

In the ever-evolving world of cruising, Carnival Cruise Line has never been one to rest on its laurels. With a proud legacy dating back to 1972 and a fleet now standing at 29 ships strong, the brand that bills itself as both “America’s Cruise Line” and the “World’s Most Popular Cruise Line” has unveiled an ambitious five-year roadmap that promises not only to expand its reach but to redefine what it means to set sail.

Dubbed the “Innovation Itinerary,” Carnival’s strategy revolves around three core pillars: operating the most fun fleet at sea, crafting compelling experiences and destinations, and building deeper guest loyalty. Announced during a media briefing aboard Carnival Celebration at PortMiami by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy, this expansive plan aims to solidify the company’s leadership in the cruise industry well into the next decade.

Sailing into the Future: New Ships on the Horizon

At the heart of Carnival’s innovation roadmap are its new ships—floating playgrounds that blend technology, entertainment, and comfort in ways designed to engage multi-generational travelers.

The next addition to the Excel class, which already includes Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration, and Carnival Jubilee, will be Carnival Festivale, scheduled to debut in spring 2027. Drawing inspiration from the original Festivale ship that helped popularize cruising for American families, this new vessel is poised to build on Carnival’s legacy while embracing modern demands.

One standout feature of Carnival Festivale is its music-centric design. Two new zones spanning Decks 6, 7, and 8 will explore the power of music, from immersive, interactive venues that reflect the creative process, to open-air spaces evoking the energy of live concerts. These experiences are designed not just as entertainment but as connective tissue for guests, creating shared memories anchored in the universal language of music.

Families remain a top priority. Carnival welcomes over one million children annually—a figure unmatched by any other cruise line. In a nod to this demographic, Festivale will feature 1,000 interconnecting staterooms (a 70% increase over previous Excel ships), and introduce a dedicated space for the Carnival Turtles program for infants aged six months to two years. Carnival’s signature youth programming will also see expanded offerings.

Festivale will unveil a completely reimagined outdoor family zone dubbed Sunsation Point on the top decks. Replacing the popular BOLT rollercoaster found on earlier Excel ships, this sprawling complex will house Carnival Waterworks Ultra—the most family-friendly water park at sea. With six water slides (including two new family raft slides), toddler splash zones, a treehouse-inspired play trail, sports courts, a mini-golf course, and evening events featuring DJs and extended water park hours, Sunsation Point promises to redefine top-deck fun for all ages.

Dining innovations are also on the menu. While fan favorites like Guy’s Burger Joint, Pig & Anchor Smokehouse, and Big Chicken will remain, Festivale will introduce new culinary concepts in collaboration with Chief Culinary Officer Emeril Lagasse. Among the changes: a new venue replacing ChiBang!, with full details expected this summer.

Looking ahead to 2028, the fifth Excel ship will debut as Carnival Tropicale, another homage to Carnival’s pioneering past. This vessel will build upon the innovations seen in Festivale, with some fresh twists of its own.

And beyond that? Carnival’s most ambitious ship class yet—Project Ace—is set to launch its first vessel in 2029, followed by two more in 2031 and 2033. Each ship will boast a staggering 230,000 gross tons and accommodate nearly 8,000 guests, making them the largest in the Carnival Corporation global fleet. With over 3,000 staterooms per ship, new entertainment zones, and outer-deck features still under wraps, Project Ace represents a giant leap into the future of cruising.

“These ships clearly represent the next generation of Fun Ships,” said Duffy. “They will be experiences unto themselves.”

Deployment and Market Expansion

Beyond its new builds, Carnival is reshaping its deployment strategy to ensure access and excitement for cruisers across the U.S. and Australia. A particularly notable update is the repositioning of Mardi Gras to shorter itineraries from Port Canaveral once Festivale begins service in 2027.

“With short cruises on Mardi Gras, our guests who may not have the time to take a weeklong vacation can still experience all the amazing features of our Excel class,” said Duffy.

Short cruises—typically three to five nights—have long served as an entry point for first-time cruisers or those with limited vacation windows. Carnival’s dominance in this segment is reflected in its offerings from nearly every major U.S. homeport, from Miami to Galveston. And now, the company is doubling down on its commitment to secondary markets as well.

Carnival will return to year-round operations in Mobile, Alabama, in spring 2027, marking a reinvestment in the Gulf Coast market. In Baltimore, plans are underway to replace Carnival Pride with a larger Conquest-class ship, boosting capacity by approximately 1,000 guests.

“We’re making sure more Americans can drive to a Carnival cruise,” Duffy emphasized.

Exclusive Destinations: The Rise of the Paradise Collection

Carnival isn’t just innovating at sea—it’s also enhancing its footprint on land. In a move to differentiate its shore experiences and deepen brand loyalty, the cruise line is introducing the Paradise Collection, a portfolio of exclusive destinations across the Caribbean and Mexico.

The collection’s crown jewel is Celebration Key, a brand-new destination on Grand Bahama Island opening in July 2025. Designed specifically for Carnival guests, the destination will welcome 20 ships from 10 homeports on more than 1,400 sailings through 2027.

Also getting a major upgrade is RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay, a perennial favorite among Caribbean cruisers. The enhancements—scheduled for completion by late 2026—will include a new pier capable of accommodating Carnival’s largest ships, preserving the island’s pristine natural beauty while unlocking more guest capacity.

In Honduras, Mahogany Bay is being rebranded as Isla Tropicale, with plans for a pool, swim-up bar, cabanas, and an expanded beach club. These developments signal Carnival’s intent to create integrated, curated shore experiences that extend the “Fun Ship” vibe from ship to shore.

Guest Experience & Fleet Enhancements

While new ships grab the spotlight, Carnival is also turning its attention to its existing fleet. In the years ahead, enhancements across current vessels will include upgraded décor, new dining venues, and refreshed entertainment programming—all inspired by the innovations debuting on upcoming ships.

This modernization is a continuation of Carnival’s long-standing tradition of reinvention, stretching back to the introduction of Fun Ship 2.0 in 2011.

Elevating Loyalty

No innovation itinerary would be complete without addressing loyalty. Carnival’s VIFP (Very Important Fun Person) program has been a cornerstone of guest engagement since 2012. Now, with the line’s growing fleet and expanding guest base, Carnival is set to evolve the program to unlock greater value for its most dedicated fans.

Duffy teased that full details will be announced this summer, with the revamped program rolling out in 2026.

“Carnival has an incredibly loyal and passionate fan base,” said Duffy. “As we continue to grow, we are modifying the program to unlock greater value and engagement for our loyal guests.”

Innovation Itinerary

Carnival Cruise Line’s “Innovation Itinerary” is more than a business plan—it’s a declaration of intent. Carnival is choosing to innovate boldly in an industry where competition is fierce and traveler expectations are higher than ever.

With new ships like Carnival Festivale and Carnival Tropicale on the way, groundbreaking megaships under the Project Ace banner, and stunning destinations like Celebration Key and Isla Tropicale enhancing its shore offerings, Carnival is charting a course that blends nostalgia with next-generation excitement.

Whether you’re a first-time cruiser enticed by a short getaway or a lifelong VIFP guest ready to experience what’s next, one thing is clear: the fun is just getting started.
