This famous New York Steakhouse is serving their finest cuts in Boca Raton.

Gallagher’s was founded 96 years ago, in November of 1927, by Ziegfeld girl Helen Gallagher and notable sports gambler Jack Solomon. An acclaimed actress and well-known bookie, an unusual team, joined together to create a much-needed gem in the theatre district of Manhattan. Many may know of Gallagher’s as a recognized steakhouse, but the distinguished establishment didn’t begin as a steakhouse. Gallagher’s opened in the days of prohibition and was one of the first speakeasy gathering places for gamblers, sports stars, and Broadway celebrities connected to Helen and Jack. It was a secluded place for the high-profile to be and be seen among friends.

In 1933, with liquor legalized, Gallagher’s evolved from a speakeasy and became Broadway’s first steakhouse. Famously, Gallagher’s is where the first “New York Strip” steak was served. The restaurant prides itself on serving the best USDA prime dry-aged beef, fired over its signature hickory coals. Over the years, Gallagher’s became the place where the city’s sports teams celebrated, where celebrities gathered, and where important business was conducted. In 1964, Gallagher’s welcomed new owners, longer hours, and the installation of the iconic meat locker. The glass refrigerated room where meat is kept is visible to guests and offers a unique view of the current stock.

The famous meat locker is part of the character of the steakhouse so it’s only natural that it’s a staple of the new Gallagher’s in Boca. Stepping into the eatery, its classic dark wood walls lined with artwork, looks and feels like a carbon copy of the authentic New York location. The highly trained staff never miss a beat and are another part of what makes Gallagher’s so iconic. A knowledgeable and attentive crew provide excellent service and ensure guests are well-accommodated.

The menu boasts a raw bar offering, specialty appetizers and salads, steaks and chops, seafood plates, specialty plates, and signature sides. There’s a variety of choices all with the Gallagher’s standard. The steak and chops section includes Porterhouse, New York Sirloin, bone-in New York sirloin sliced, filet mignon, rib steak, rib veal chop, lamb chops, chopped steak, and limited roast prime rib of beef. Also on the menu is a 52nd Street Salad, paying homage to the original Gallagher’s location.

On a recent trip to Gallagher’s Steakhouse in Boca Raton I chose to start with the burrata and coal-fired peppers. My personal choice for meat was the filet mignon and New York Sirloin with family-style sides of roasted corn, mushrooms, and brussels sprouts. No cocktails for me as I’m currently expecting so we’ll try that on the next visit. The food was delicious overall, and the steak lived up to it’s reputation, as did the service and staff. The price point makes this a great spot for special occasions.
