The stage lights of America’s Got Talent (AGT) have seen many stars, but none shine quite like Orlando Leyba. His journey from a satellite engineer to one of the most loved comedians on America’s largest talent platform is a testament to the unpredictable nature of life. The premiere of the show’s 18th season sees him living his dream.

“It feels like I’m living inside of a dream and please don’t wake me up,” Leyba told Forbes, expressing his gratitude for the opportunity to rub shoulders with Terry Crews and share candid conversations with the judges Simon Cowell, Sofía Vergara, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandel.

Leyba’s voyage in comedy began in an improv school in Miami, gifted to him by his wife for his birthday. This gift propelled him on a trajectory he could never have foreseen, turning him from a satellite engineer into a stand-up comic. He didn’t just transition into this new career but embraced it wholeheartedly, investing his 401(k) to pursue his dream in Los Angeles.

For Leyba, appearing on the AGT stage is more than just a personal triumph. It’s a chance to connect with millions, to be a beacon of light in someone’s day. “Being on that stage for a few minutes allows me to showcase myself, and to also be of service,” he explained.

The judges on AGT are known for their critical acumen, often pushing contestants to new heights. Leyba handles criticism with grace, considering it a tool for improvement, especially when it comes from individuals seeking to elevate the show’s quality.

His unique style of comedy draws from his everyday life – the journeys he undertakes, the people he meets, and the food he enjoys. Notably, his 15-year marriage has been a rich source of inspiration. “My 15-year marriage has inspired most of my comedy. Again, you can say Vanessa got into stand-up,” he quips, revealing the intertwined nature of his personal and professional life.

His Miami roots, characterized by a mix of vibrant, outspoken individuals, have undeniably shaped his comedic perspective. Experiences like exploring Yellowstone nature reserve further feed his comedic prowess, becoming woven into his routines in unexpected, delightful ways.

His ability to connect with audiences and take them on a journey with his stories is one of his most admired skills. He attributes this to his love for the show Reading Rainbow from his childhood and tries to recreate the sense of communal fun it inspired in his performances.

In the evolving comedy scene of Miami, Leyba sees himself as a proud product, acknowledging the immense talent emerging from there.

Before a major performance, Leyba believes in the value of preparation and the importance of being present in the moment. This presence fuels his improvisation, one of the charms of his performances.

What can we expect from his performance on the AGT stage? “You can expect to see a person full of gratitude, who is blessed to have found his purpose, saying a few funny things,” he modestly admits.

For budding comedians, he has some wise words: “Set your goal, make a plan, work the plan and believe in yourself. You can control only what’s in your control. And have Faith.”

From his journey so far, it’s evident that Orlando Leyba is not just a stand-up comedian; he’s a man whose humor is grounded in life’s simplest joys and unexpected turns. His performances are not merely acts but a testament to the power of dreams, hard work, and a pinch of laughter.

Make sure you tune in tonight to the Season 18 Premiere show AMERICA’S GOT TALENT on NBC 8pm ET/PT to check out Orlando’s performance.
